What Are Eating Disorders?
Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that involve persistent disturbances in eating behaviors and the thoughts and emotions that drive them. They’re not about willpower, vanity, or lifestyle choices. They’re complex medical conditions that require professional treatment.
At MindWell Psychiatric Services, we provide compassionate eating disorder treatment in Las Vegas. We understand that eating disorders are about much more than food; they’re often connected to deeper struggles with control, emotions, trauma, or self-worth. Our psychiatric care addresses the underlying mental health aspects to support your recovery.
Understanding Eating Disorders
Eating disorders affect people of all genders, ages, races, and body types. They have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, yet they remain undertreated and misunderstood.
Eating disorders aren’t choices. They’re complex conditions influenced by genetics, brain chemistry, psychology, and environment. The behaviors may start as an attempt to cope with difficult emotions or gain control during stressful times, but they quickly take on a life of their own.
Recovery is possible. With proper treatment addressing both the physical and psychological aspects, most people can heal their relationship with food and their bodies.
How Eating Disorders Affect Daily Life
Eating disorders consume far more than just mealtimes. They affect every aspect of life:
- Physical health — Malnutrition, heart problems, digestive issues, bone loss, hormonal disruption
- Mental health — Anxiety, depression, obsessive thoughts, social isolation
- Relationships — Withdrawing from social situations involving food, lying about eating, and family conflict
- Work and school — Difficulty concentrating, fatigue, missed days due to illness or treatment
- Daily functioning — Constant preoccupation with food, weight, calories, and body image
Without treatment, eating disorders often worsen and can become life-threatening. But recovery is absolutely possible with the right support.
Signs and Symptoms of Eating Disorders
Eating disorders present differently depending on the type, but there are common warning signs to watch for.
Behavioral Signs:
- Restrictive eating, dieting, or fasting
- Binge eating (eating large amounts in short periods)
- Purging behaviors (vomiting, laxatives, excessive exercise)
- Rigid food rules or rituals
- Avoiding meals or eating in secret
- Frequent body checking or weighing
- Excessive exercise despite injury or illness
Emotional and Cognitive Signs:
- Preoccupation with food, weight, and body shape
- Intense fear of gaining weight
- Distorted body image
- Feelings of shame or guilt around eating
- Using food to cope with emotions
- Denial of hunger or minimizing symptoms
Physical Signs:
- Significant weight changes (up or down)
- Fatigue and weakness
- Digestive problems (constipation, bloating)
- Dizziness or fainting
- Feeling cold all the time
- Hair loss or dry skin
- For women: irregular or absent periods
If you or someone you care about is showing these signs, professional help is important. Eating disorders are serious but treatable.
Types of Eating Disorders
Eating Disorders Exist on a Spectrum. Understanding Your Diagnosis Guides Treatment

Anorexia Nervosa
Restriction of food intake leading to significantly low body weight, intense fear of gaining weight, and distorted body image. People often don’t see how thin they’ve become.

Bulimia Nervosa
Recurrent binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors: purging, fasting, or excessive exercise. People with bulimia may be at a normal weight.

Binge Eating Disorder
Recurrent episodes of eating large amounts rapidly with feelings of shame and loss of control. No regular compensatory behaviors like purging.

ARFID
Avoidance of food based on sensory characteristics or fear of negative consequences. Not driven by body image concerns. Can lead to nutritional deficiencies.

OSFED
Eating disorders that don’t meet full criteria but still cause significant distress and impairment. The most common diagnosis thats just as serious as others.
Eating disorders frequently co-occur with other mental health conditions. Anxiety, depression, and OCD are especially common. Addressing these underlying conditions is often essential for lasting recovery.

When to Seek Help
Many people with eating disorders delay seeking help, sometimes for years. Shame, denial, and the eating disorder itself can be barriers. If any of the following apply, reaching out is important.
Consider reaching out if:
- You’re preoccupied with food, weight, or body image
- Your eating behaviors are affecting your health and/or daily life
- You feel out of control around food
- You’re using food to cope with emotions
- Others have expressed concern about your eating
- You’re hiding your eating behaviors from others
- You’ve had medical complications from eating behaviors
Eating disorders thrive in secrecy. Reaching out is the first step toward breaking free. At MindWell, we provide a judgment-free environment where you can begin to heal.
How MindWell Treats Eating Disorders
At MindWell Psychiatric Services, we provide psychiatric care as part of a comprehensive eating disorder treatment approach. We work alongside your treatment team to address the mental health aspects of recovery.
Psychiatric Evaluation
Your treatment begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. We’ll discuss your eating behaviors, mental health history, and how the eating disorder is affecting your life. This helps us understand your unique situation and create an effective treatment plan.
Medication Management
Medication can be an important part of eating disorder treatment. Depending on your diagnosis, medications can help reduce binge urges, manage anxiety and depression, or address obsessive thoughts about food and weight. We carefully select and monitor medications.
Genetic Testing
Finding the right medication can involve trial and error. Genetic testing can help identify which medications are most likely to be effective for you, potentially speeding up your path to stability.
Integrated Care
Eating disorders typically require a treatment team — including therapists, dietitians, and sometimes medical doctors. We provide the psychiatric piece of the puzzle and coordinate with your other providers to ensure comprehensive care.
Ongoing Support
Recovery from an eating disorder is a process. We provide regular medication management appointments to monitor your progress, adjust medications, and support your ongoing recovery.
