Psychiatric Genetic Testing in Las Vegas

Tired of trying medication after medication? Genetic testing takes the guesswork out of finding the right psychiatric medication. A simple cheek swab tells us how your body processes different drugs—so we can find what works faster.

At MindWell Psychiatric Services, we use pharmacogenetic testing to personalize your treatment from day one. No more months of trial and error. No more dealing with side effects from medications that were never right for you.

What Is Psychiatric Genetic Testing?

Psychiatric genetic testing (also called pharmacogenetic testing) analyzes your DNA to see how your body metabolizes medications. The test looks at specific genes that affect how you respond to antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, mood stabilizers, ADHD medications, and more.

The test reveals:

  • Which medications are most likely to work for you
  • Which medications may cause more side effects
  • Whether you need a higher or lower dose than average
  • Which medications to avoid based on your genetics

This information helps us skip the guesswork and start you on a medication that fits your unique biology.

How Genetic Testing Works at MindWell

The process is simple and painless:

Step 1: Cheek Swab

During your appointment, we collect a small DNA sample using a simple cheek swab. It takes less than a minute and doesn’t hurt.

Step 2: Lab Analysis

Your sample goes to a specialized lab where genetic experts analyze your DNA. They look for variations in genes that affect medication processing.

Step 3: Results Review (7-10 Days)

Within about a week, we receive your results. Michael Kuron, MSN, APRN, PMHNP, personally reviews your genetic report and explains what it means for your treatment.

Step 4: Personalized Treatment Plan

Based on your results, we create or adjust your medication management plan. If you’re already taking something that isn’t a good genetic match, we’ll discuss alternatives that may work better.

Who Should Consider Genetic Testing?

Genetic testing is especially helpful if you:

  • Have tried multiple medications without success
  • Experience frequent or severe side effects from psychiatric medications
  • Have a family history of poor medication response
  • Want to find the right medication faster (instead of months of trial and error)
  • Are starting psychiatric treatment for the first time and want a head start

Genetic testing can be performed as part of your initial psychiatric evaluation or added to your existing treatment plan at any time.

Conditions We Treat with Genetic-Guided Care

Genetic testing helps us optimize treatment for a wide range of mental health conditions. By understanding how your body processes medications, we can create more effective treatment plans for:

  • Depression – Find antidepressants that work with your unique chemistry
  • Anxiety – Identify anti-anxiety medications less likely to cause unwanted side effects
  • ADHD – Determine which stimulant or non-stimulant options may work best
  • Bipolar Disorder – Guide mood stabilizer selection for better outcomes
  • PTSD – Personalize trauma-focused medication support
  • OCD – Optimize SSRI dosing for obsessive-compulsive symptoms

Frequently Asked Questions

Is genetic testing covered by insurance?

Many insurance plans cover pharmacogenetic testing, especially if you’ve tried other medications first. We verify your coverage before ordering the test.

Does the test hurt?

Not at all. It’s a simple cheek swab that takes less than a minute. No blood draw required.

How long until I get results?

Results typically arrive within 7-10 days. We’ll review them with you at a follow-up appointment.

Will genetic testing tell me exactly which medication to take?

The test provides guidance, not a prescription. It shows which medications are more likely to work based on your genetics. Your provider uses this information along with your symptoms, history, and preferences to recommend the best option.

Can I do genetic testing if I'm already on medication?

Yes. In fact, testing can help explain why a current medication isn’t working well or is causing side effects. We can use the results to find a better alternative.

Is my genetic information kept private?

Yes. Your genetic data is protected by federal privacy laws (HIPAA) and is only used for your medical care.
