Psychiatric Evaluation and Diagnosis

Psychiatric Evaluation in Las Vegas
Not sure what’s going on with your mental health? A psychiatric evaluation is the first step toward getting answers. At MindWell Psychiatric Services, we take the time to understand your symptoms, your history, and your goals—then provide an accurate diagnosis and a clear path forward.
Whether you’re experiencing symptoms for the first time or have been struggling for years without real answers, we’re here to help.
What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of your mental health. It’s a conversation—not a test you can pass or fail—where we gather information about your symptoms, medical history, family history, and life circumstances to understand what you’re experiencing.
During your evaluation, we’ll discuss:
- Your current symptoms and how long you’ve had them
- Your medical history and any medications you’re taking
- Your family’s mental health history
- Past treatments (what worked, what didn’t)
- Life stressors, relationships, and daily functioning
- Your goals for treatment
By the end, you’ll have a clearer understanding of what’s happening and what we can do about it.

What Happens During Your Appointment
Before Your Visit
You’ll complete intake paperwork that asks about your symptoms, medical history, and what brought you in. This helps us prepare and make the most of our time together.
During the Evaluation (60 Minutes)
Your first appointment is a full hour with Michael Kuron, MSN, APRN, PMHNP. We’ll talk through your symptoms, history, and concerns in detail. This isn’t a rushed 15-minute appointment—we take the time to actually listen.
After the Evaluation
Based on our conversation, we’ll discuss:
- Whether a diagnosis is appropriate
- What your treatment options are (medication, therapy, or both)
- Next steps and follow-up schedule
You’ll leave with a clear understanding of your diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan.

Who Should Get a Psychiatric Evaluation?
Consider scheduling an evaluation if you’re experiencing:
- Persistent sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness
- Excessive worry, fear, or panic attacks
- Difficulty concentrating or staying organized
- Mood swings or emotional instability
- Trouble sleeping (too much or too little)
- Changes in appetite or energy levels
- Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
- Symptoms that interfere with work, relationships, or daily life
You don’t need a referral. If something feels off, that’s reason enough to get evaluated. Not sure if your symptoms warrant an evaluation? Read about the signs it’s time to seek psychiatric help.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral for a psychiatric evaluation?
No. You can schedule directly with MindWell without a referral from your primary care doctor.
How long does a psychiatric evaluation take?
Your initial appointment is 60 minutes. This gives us enough time to thoroughly understand your symptoms and history.
What's the difference between a psychiatric evaluation and therapy?
A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of your mental health. Wondering if you need a psychiatrist specifically? Learn the difference between a psychiatrist, psychologist, and therapist. Therapy (counseling) is ongoing treatment focused on working through issues over time. We provide evaluations and medication management; we can refer you to therapists for counseling.
Will I get a diagnosis at my first appointment?
In most cases, yes. If your situation is complex, we may need additional information before making a final diagnosis.
Can you prescribe medication at the first visit?
Yes, if medication is appropriate based on your evaluation. We’ll discuss the options and you can decide together what makes sense.
What should I bring to my evaluation?
Bring a list of current medications, any previous mental health records if available, and your insurance card. Most importantly, come ready to talk openly about what you’re experiencing.
