Mental Health Care Built for Veterans
Finding quality mental health care as a veteran shouldn’t feel like another battle. Too many service members and veterans have had negative experiences with providers who don’t understand military culture, don’t take the time to listen, or push treatments without proper explanation. At MindWell Psychiatric Services, we take a different approach.
Michael Kuron, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, brings both military experience and years of VA psychiatric care to his practice. He served 4 years as a Navy Corpsman and spent 7 years working at the VA—5 of those in inpatient psychiatry. This background shapes everything about how MindWell serves veterans.
What Makes MindWell Different
A Provider Who Listens Many veterans avoid mental health care because of past experiences where they felt unheard or rushed through appointments. At MindWell, your concerns come first. Michael takes the time to understand your full history—your service, your experiences, and what’s been happening since.
Treatment You Understand If medication is part of your treatment plan, you’ll know exactly why it’s being recommended, how it works, and what to expect. Questions are welcomed, not dismissed.
Decisions Made Together You won’t be forced into treatments that don’t make sense to you. Treatment decisions are made collaboratively, with full transparency about why specific approaches are recommended. Lasting progress requires your active participation.
Military Culture Understood You won’t have to explain what a deployment is or why transitioning to civilian life is harder than people think. Michael’s been there.

Veteran-Specific Conditions We Treat

PTSD Treatment
Combat PTSD, operational stress, military sexual trauma (MST), and moral injury. Flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and emotional numbness are treatable conditions.

Depression Treatment
Military-to-civilian transition, loss of purpose, survivor's guilt, and the cumulative weight of service can trigger depression. Veteran-focused treatment is available.

Anxiety Treatment
The constant alertness that kept you safe during deployment can become chronic anxiety in civilian life. Veterans respond well to treatment.

Traumatic Brain Injury
Blast exposure, training injuries, and repeated impacts can cause mood swings, memory problems, and difficulty concentrating. TBI symptoms often overlap with PTSD and need accurate diagnosis.

Moral Injury
Deep guilt or shame from experiences that conflict with your personal values. Moral injury is different from PTSD and needs a different treatment approach. Many veterans carry this silently for years.

Sleep Disorders
Combat-related insomnia, nightmares, and disrupted sleep affect mood, focus, and physical health. Treatment helps veterans get real rest.
Many veterans in Las Vegas deal with more than one mental health condition at a time. Overlapping symptoms make it harder to get the right diagnosis. A provider with military experience knows what to look for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does MindWell accept Tricare?
Yes. We accept Tricare, TriWest, and CHAMPVA, along with most major insurance plans.
Do you prescribe medication?
Yes. As a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, Michael can prescribe and manage psychiatric medications. Medication decisions are always made collaboratively, with full explanation of benefits, risks, and alternatives.
Does MindWell treat combat PTSD?
Yes. Michael Kuron has direct experience treating combat-related PTSD from his years at the VA. He understands the difference between general PTSD and the complex trauma that comes from military service, including moral injury and military sexual trauma.
Do I need a VA referral to see MindWell?
It depends on your situation. If you are using VA Community Care through TriWest, you will need authorization from the VA first. If you are using TRICARE, CHAMPVA, commercial insurance, or self-pay, no VA referral is needed.
Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist?
This depends on your insurance plan. Some plans require referrals while others allow direct access to mental health specialists. Contact our office or your insurance provider to verify requirements for your specific plan.
Can I do telehealth for my appointments?
Yes. After an initial evaluation, most follow-up appointments can be conducted via telehealth for your convenience.
What if I had a bad experience at the VA?
You’re not alone. Many veterans come to MindWell after frustrating experiences in the VA system. Michael spent 7 years working at the VA and understands both its strengths and limitations. At MindWell, you’ll get the time, attention, and transparency that’s often missing in larger systems.
What should I expect at my first appointment?
Your initial psychiatric evaluation typically lasts 60 minutes. Michael will review your history, discuss your current concerns, and work with you to develop a treatment plan. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of your diagnosis and recommended next steps.
Does MindWell accept veterans without insurance?
Yes. Self-pay appointments are available at transparent rates. An initial psychiatric evaluation is $250 and follow-up medication management visits are $150. Same-day appointments are available for cash-pay patients.
Can I see a private psychiatrist with TRICARE or CHAMPVA?
Yes. MindWell accepts both TRICARE and CHAMPVA for outpatient psychiatric care in Las Vegas. Most plans do not require a referral. Call us to verify your specific coverage before your first visit.
What is the difference between VA mental health and private psychiatry?
The VA provides mental health services to eligible veterans, but wait times can be long and provider turnover is common. Private psychiatry at MindWell offers shorter wait times, longer appointments, one consistent provider, and telehealth options after your first visit. Some veterans use both.
